P.E. Shotwell Celebration Day
Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame
Football season is just around the corner, and the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame Museum in the Mall of Abilene is celebrating with P.E. Shotwell Day on Saturday, Aug. 10. – Admission will be free to the museum all day.
A special program will be held at 11 a.m. to highlight P.E. Shotwell’s career and give a history of Shotwell Stadium. This is the 65th anniversary of Abilene’s Shotwell Stadium, which has a remarkable history in itself. You might ask yourself just who P.E. Shotwell was; for whom the stadium was named? He was one of the early most successful football coaches in Texas high school history. In fact, the museum has a picture of his first team at Cisco in 1916.
There will be several guest speakers who will share interesting facts about memorable games played at Shotwell. For example, did you know the longest field goal in football history was kicked at Shotwell Stadium?
Shotwell stadium has hosted numerous state championship games, and every high school and college team in Abilene has played at Shotwell Stadium at one time or another, even many Big Country teams have played postseason games in Shotwell as well.
Again, admission will be free for the program and all-day Saturday, Aug. 10. Donations are encouraged to help support the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame.
